Victor Ndundu Karanja, a student at Kirawa Road School in Kitusuru, died on Wednesday, 4 November while on a school excursion in Tanzania, with early reports indicating he drowned during a swimming expedition.
His parents travelled to Tanzania and have publicly called for a detailed account of the events leading to the drowning and the response of staff accompanying the learners.
A statement released after the tragedy urged Kirawa Road School’s management to provide the bereaved family with a comprehensive explanation of what occurred during the excursion.
The family also appealed to the Ministry of Education and the Kenyan High Commission in Tanzania for urgent assistance in obtaining information and navigating the necessary procedures in the foreign country.
Victor was the stepson of Gitaru Ward MCA Jane Thogori and hailed from Kibiku near the local police station, adding a political dimension to the calls for transparency.
The incident has revived concerns about learner safety on school trips, especially where hazardous recreational activities such as swimming are involved.
The family’s immediate priority is to understand what happened to their son, while they also seek institutional support as they cope with the tragedy in a foreign country.
