During a mention at Kibera Law Courts, the court was informed that some of the children charged with the murder of 16 girls from Utumishi Academy have submitted plea‑bargaining applications.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has formally received a plea‑bargain request from one accused, while another defence lawyer has written to the ODPP on behalf of his client seeking similar negotiations.

State Counsel told the court that the prosecution has received the request concerning Subject 3 and that preliminary discussions have taken place, though further consultation with the child remains necessary.

A second minor, through his lawyer, also notified the court of a formal plea‑bargaining request and asked for enhanced parental visits to facilitate consultations with the child and his parents.

Other defence counsel indicated they are still consulting their clients and families before deciding whether to pursue plea negotiations.

Judge Kavedza permitted the plea‑bargaining discussions to proceed and directed that parents of all the children be granted enhanced visits, coordinated with the institution where the minors are detained.

The court ordered that the matter be mentioned every two weeks to monitor progress, with the next mention scheduled for 11 November 2026.

Children’s officer Hilda Mbatha confirmed that the minors are continuing their education and are expected to sit for examinations the following week, as directed by the judge.
