Kibabii University in Bungoma announced an indefinite suspension of teaching and learning on Tuesday, October 6, following violent student protests triggered by a night‑time attack on students.

The unrest began after a third‑year student was reportedly killed and three others injured in an assault by unknown assailants on Monday night.

In a special Senate meeting held the same day, the university’s governing body approved the closure, citing the security crisis as the primary reason for halting the first semester of the 2026/2027 academic year.

An internal memo from Registrar of Academic Affairs Jacklyne Okello Alari instructed all students to vacate the university premises, including hostels, by 3 pm on Tuesday.

The university did not provide a date for resumption, advising students to seek alternative accommodation until further notice.

The closure coincides with a nationwide lecturers’ strike that began on Friday, October 2, after the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) failed to reach an agreement on the 2025–2029 collective bargaining agreement.

UASU members, including lecturers at Kibabii University, have continued industrial action demanding resolution of the CBA, salary funding from the Exchequer, and other human‑resource matters.
