Kenyatta University confirmed that a number of students have been treated for cholera‑related diarrhoea and vomiting at its health unit, prompting an internal memorandum dated 16 September.
The memorandum attributes the outbreak to food consumed at KM, a trading hub adjacent to the campus, and advises students to rely on meals served in university restaurants and messes rather than external vendors.
Preventive measures outlined for students
Students are instructed to drink only treated water, avoid raw foods such as salads, fruits and vegetables unless the washing water is verified safe, and ensure all meals are thoroughly cooked and served hot.
The advisory stresses regular hand hygiene, recommending washing hands with soap and running water after toilet use and before handling food.
Students showing symptoms such as diarrhoea, vomiting, abdominal pain or other gastrointestinal signs are urged to seek immediate medical attention and to report suspected cases to the University Health Unit for prompt response.
Call for cooperation from university authorities
The advisory, signed by Prof. Perez Onono Okelo, Ag Registrar of Academics, calls on all students to cooperate fully with the recommended health and safety measures to contain the outbreak.
