Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury, John Mbadi, held a bilateral meeting with Eric Meyer, deputy assistant secretary for Africa and the Middle East at the US Treasury, on the sidelines of the 2026 IMF/World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok on 12 October.
The Treasury disclosed the engagement via a statement on X, describing it as part of Kenya’s broader economic diplomacy with international partners.
Discussions covered Kenya’s macro‑economic outlook, trends in remittance flows from the United States, prospects for technical cooperation on digital assets, and the Business Laws (Amendment) Act.
Both sides also reviewed progress on Kenya’s Governance Diagnostic Report, a component of the country’s engagement with the Fund on public‑accountability reforms.
The talks explored how US development‑financing frameworks could broaden bilateral cooperation, including health priorities and broader development financing.
Kenya’s IMF programme has stalled after the Finance Bill 2024 was withdrawn in June 2024, creating a fiscal gap that disrupted conditions attached to the Extended Fund Facility.
Negotiations on a new programme structure have faced delays, leaving Kenya’s access to IMF financing uncertain while the government seeks to stabilise public finances.
