The Communications Authority of Kenya recorded a total of 129,140 .KE domains at the close of June 2026, reflecting an addition of 4,642 registrations since the previous quarter.
Quarter‑on‑quarter growth slowed to 3.7% after a stronger 5.4% increase between December 2025 and March 2026, indicating a moderation in the pace of new registrations.
Commercial .co.ke domains dominate the market, with 110,687 of the 124,498 registrations recorded in March 2026, representing roughly nine out of ten domains.
Digital landscape versus domain ownership
Kenya’s broader digital environment includes 64.26 million mobile data subscriptions, 54.93 million mobile broadband subscriptions and 52.26 million smartphones, alongside 2.84 million fixed‑line connections.
These connectivity figures illustrate the scale of internet access but cannot be directly compared with domain registrations, as they measure different aspects of digital participation.
While many businesses operate online via social media, messaging apps and mobile‑money platforms, owning a .KE domain provides a distinct digital asset for websites, branded email and a permanent web address.
KeNIC’s push to broaden adoption
The Kenya Network Information Centre is collaborating with accredited registrars to simplify registration and bundle domain purchases with AI‑assisted website‑building tools, aiming to make domains a more integral part of business setup.
KeNIC has set an ambition of reaching one million .KE domains, acknowledging that achieving this will require faster adoption and broader awareness of the commercial benefits of a local web address.
Future growth will depend on small and medium‑sized enterprises seeing tangible value in a domain and on registrars offering end‑to‑end packages that cover hosting, security and ongoing maintenance.
