The Kenya Bankers Association (KBA) introduced the Banking Industry Sustainable Finance Roadmap, a framework aimed at scaling sustainable finance, strengthening climate and nature risk management, and improving sustainability disclosures across Kenyan banks.

Developed by KBA’s Centre for Sustainable Finance and Enterprise Development (CSFED) in partnership with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and WWF‑Kenya, the roadmap offers a practical blueprint for embedding sustainability into governance, risk management, lending decisions, reporting and capital allocation.

The initiative aligns with Kenya’s broader push to accelerate sustainable economic growth, boost climate resilience and mobilise private‑sector capital for environmental and development priorities.

KBA Chairman and KCB Group CEO Paul Russo said the roadmap moves the industry from sustainability pledges to concrete implementation, helping banks translate ambitions into action plans that direct funding toward green and sustainable projects while managing climate‑related financial risks.

KBA Chief Executive Officer Raimond Molenje highlighted that the framework consolidates existing industry initiatives and provides clear steps for banks to integrate sustainability into governance, risk management, reporting and capital allocation.

Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, Festus Ngeno, called the roadmap an important step for the financial sector’s contribution to Kenya’s climate ambitions, stressing that environmental protection must be treated as a core economic priority.

IFC Regional Director for Eastern Africa Mary Porter Peschka described the launch as a milestone that will help mobilise capital toward sustainable development priorities, while WWF‑Kenya CEO Jackson Kiplagat said the roadmap shifts the sector from voluntary commitments to measurable institutional action.

The roadmap was unveiled at the Banking Industry Sustainable Finance Summit 2026, which gathered banking leaders, investors, development partners, regulators and policymakers to discuss climate‑risk governance, sustainability disclosures and finance’s role in Kenya’s environmental and economic goals.
