Six truck drivers, including Kenyan nationals, were reportedly abducted by armed rebels in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo before being found safe, prompting a fresh security advisory for Kenyan operators.

The Long‑Distance Drivers and Conductors Association of Kenya (LoDCA) issued the advisory, highlighting deteriorating conditions along the Mahavi‑Kisangani route that traverses Pimbo, Djugu, Igabriel and Bunia.

LoDCA confirmed that the six drivers were later found unharmed, though it did not disclose how they were recovered or provide further details on the abduction.

Images circulating after the incident showed trucks with shattered windows, deflated tyres and missing registration plates, and cargo scattered on the ground, suggesting possible looting or attack.

The advisory follows a series of lethal incidents, including the killing of Kenyan driver Edwin Njuguna in Bunia earlier this year and the August attack that left four Kenyan drivers dead on the Beni‑Kisangani road.

In response to the August killings, operators halted movements in parts of Ituri Province, parking many vehicles in Mambasa while awaiting safety guarantees.

LoDCA’s latest advisory urges drivers waiting in Mahagi to delay departures until reliable security assessments indicate improved conditions.

Drivers already in the DRC are advised to keep relatives, colleagues and association officials informed of their routes, remain in secure locations and avoid high‑risk corridors.

The repeated attacks threaten regional trade, as insecurity along key corridors hampers the movement of goods between East African markets and the DRC.
