The National Treasury confirmed that Kenya has secured a US$2.08 million (approximately Sh270 million) grant to enhance climate resilience in the agricultural sector.
Cabinet Secretary for Finance John Mbadi signed the Climate Smart Agribusiness Partnerships for Resilience (CSAPR) Grant Agreement on 29 October during a meeting with IFAD Country Director Matteo Marchisio.
The funding, provided by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation through the International Fund for Agricultural Development, will complement Kenya’s Integrated Natural Resources Management Programme (INReMP).
According to the Treasury, the grant will integrate Climate Information Systems into agricultural value chains, enabling farmers and agribusinesses to access and use climate data for risk management.
The initiative aims to bridge the gap between the availability of climate information and its practical application, helping stakeholders decide planting dates, crop choices, irrigation schedules and preparation for extreme events.
Kenya’s agriculture remains vulnerable to unpredictable rainfall and prolonged dry spells, which threaten crop yields, livestock and rural livelihoods.
During the signing, Mbadi reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to deepen cooperation with IFAD, while Marchisio pledged continued partnership to support agricultural transformation and rural livelihoods.
The grant aligns with Kenya’s broader goal of increasing agricultural productivity, strengthening food security and building resilience against climate‑related shocks.
