Kenya Power used its X account on Friday, 30 October, to share energy‑saving guidance aimed at helping consumers lower their monthly electricity charges.
The utility highlighted the phenomenon of “phantom loading” – also known as standby power – where devices such as TVs, phone chargers, microwaves and desktop computers continue drawing electricity while switched off but still plugged in.
Kenya Power explained that the cumulative effect of multiple appliances left on standby can add a noticeable sum to a household’s bill each month.
To curb this hidden consumption, the company advised consumers to unplug devices when not in use and to consider replacing older appliances with energy‑efficient models.
The advisory arrives as Kenyan households grapple with higher electricity charges after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) revised tariffs, pushing bills up for both domestic and commercial users.
The tariff increase has sparked concern, especially among low‑income families for whom electricity represents a significant portion of monthly expenses.
Many consumers have voiced frustration on social media, describing the new bills as unaffordable, while calling for regulatory relief or subsidies.
Kenya Power’s tips are intended to provide immediate, low‑cost measures that households can adopt while broader policy solutions are debated.
