The Kenya Meteorological Department (Kenya Met) issued a forecast for September 15‑21, 2026, indicating rainfall across a majority of the country as the nation moves toward the October‑November‑December (OND) rains.

Sunny intervals are projected for Isiolo, Mandera, Marsabit, Samburu, Turkana and Wajir during the same period.

Temperature trends

Daytime temperatures above 30 °C are forecast for Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Garissa, Wajir, Isiolo, Marsabit and Turkana, while night‑time lows under 10 °C are expected in Meru, Tharaka‑Nithi, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Nyeri, Nakuru, Narok, Taita‑Taveta and Kajiado.

The department noted that daytime temperatures generally fell across the country compared with the previous week, though a few stations such as Wajir, Voi and Lodwar recorded slight increases.

Night‑time temperatures rose in most regions, with only a handful of stations like Suba, Kisumu and Kisii showing marginal declines.

Recent rainfall patterns

The new forecast follows a dry spell from September 7‑13, during which only a few counties—Busia, Kisii, Kilifi, Mombasa and Kwale—recorded measurable rain.

Busia’s Ministry of Water Office logged the highest seven‑day total at 120.7 mm, while Mtwapa recorded 77.1 mm in a single day on September 11.

Temperature extremes were also noted, with Mandera reaching 38.5 °C on September 11 and Nyahururu dropping to 5.8 °C on September 12, marking the week’s highest maximum and lowest minimum respectively.

Preparedness advice

Kenya Met urged citizens to use the forecast to plan for potential hazards, emphasizing that the window for OND‑season preparedness is now open.

The department advised residents to protect lives and livelihoods by acting before hazards occur, especially in areas expecting heavy rain or extreme temperatures.
