The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) released a public notice on 21 September 2026 warning of deteriorating weather and sea conditions along Kenya’s coastline for the next four months.

The notice lists strong winds, rough seas, high waves, heavy rainfall and reduced visibility as the main hazards that could affect vessels and coastal communities.

Safety instructions for maritime users

KMA urges fisherfolk, boat owners, operators and passengers to monitor official updates and to refrain from going out to sea during periods of adverse weather.

All vessels must be properly secured whether underway, moored or at anchor, and crew and passengers are required to wear life jackets at all times on board.

Fisherfolk and other maritime stakeholders are advised to postpone non‑essential sea activities and to seek safe shelter if already at sea when conditions worsen.

The public can obtain ongoing weather and safety updates from both the Kenya Meteorological Department and the Kenya Maritime Authority, and report any maritime incident to the Regional Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre on 0737719414 or 0721368313.

The advisory coincides with an 81 % probability of a strong El Niño developing this year, which the Kenya Meteorological Service Authority says could extend its effects into early 2027.
