The Kenya National Highways Authority issued a notice on 29 September directing traders who have set up unauthorised stalls on road reserves to dismantle them within a 30‑day period.

The deadline for removal is set for 29 October 2026; structures that remain after that date will be taken down without further notice to the owners.

The notice lists the affected corridors as the Likoni‑Ukunda‑Lunga Lunga (A7) road, the Kilifi‑Malindi‑Garsen‑Witu (A7) road, the Maili Tisa‑Kitale (B14) road and the Eldoret‑Nyaru (B124) road.

KeNHA cites the Kenya Roads Act of 2007 and the Traffic Act (Cap 403) as the legal basis for treating occupation of road reserves as an offence.

According to the authority, clearing the reserves will allow planned upgrades such as service‑road improvements, new bus bays and drainage rehabilitation on the four routes.

The works form part of KeNHA’s performance‑based maintenance and safety‑enhancement programme, which aims to improve visibility, safety and reduce traffic congestion.

Owners of any structures that are not removed by the deadline will be charged for the removal, in line with the relevant road‑reserve protection regulations.
