The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) carried out an on‑site inspection of the Suyani/Morijo–Baragoi section of the Maralal–Suyani–Baragoi (A4) road on Thursday, 1 October, focusing on gravelling works that are currently underway.
Inspectors examined the quality of construction materials, compaction levels, drainage systems, earthworks and camber grading to verify compliance with required engineering standards.
KeNHA said the checks are intended to ensure the road works meet the required engineering standards and contribute to a safe, durable national trunk road network.
Regional Director Howard M’mayi issued technical guidance to the construction team on site following the inspection.
The route has long been linked to security challenges, with poor accessibility cited as a factor that hampers rapid response by security agencies.
In 2024 the government began grading the 100‑kilometre Maralal–Baragoi road, aiming to improve response times for security teams and facilitate market access for livestock traders.
Recent incidents include a bus attack on the Maralal‑Baragoi route in August that injured the driver and two other people, and an ambush on a police truck in Charda in February 2025 that killed the driver and allowed eight prisoners to escape.
President William Ruto inaugurated the 30‑kilometre Maralal–Suyani section in November 2025, with KeNHA projecting that the upgraded road would enhance security, cut travel time and vehicle maintenance costs, and improve market access.
