The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has issued a notice requiring roadside traders and other occupants in Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, Tana River, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet and Baringo to remove illegal structures from road reserves within 30 days.
Director General Luka Kimeli signed the notice on Tuesday, 29 September 2026, setting the deadline for removal as Thursday, 29 October 2026.
The order applies to four major routes: the Likoni‑Ukunda‑Lunga Lunga road linking Kwale and Mombasa, the Kilifi‑Malindi‑Garsen‑Witu road connecting Kilifi, Tana River and Lamu, the Maili Tisa‑Kitalo road to South Sudan, and the Eldoret‑Nyaru road between Uasin Gishu and Baringo.
KeNHA warned that any structures remaining after the deadline will be removed without further notice and the owners will bear the removal costs.
The clearance is intended to enable service‑road upgrades, construction of bus bays and drainage rehabilitation along the affected corridors.
KeNHA noted that illegal occupation of road reserves breaches the Kenya Roads Act, 2007 and the Traffic Act, Cap 403, and that removal will follow the legal framework governing road‑reserve protection.
