The Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) officially handed over a refurbished medicine store at Port Reitz Sub‑County Hospital in Mombasa County on 26 October 2026.
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir presided over the ceremony, highlighting the partnership between the national agency and the county government.
The refurbishment was carried out under KEMSA’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme for the 2025/2026 financial year, following a joint needs assessment conducted in April 2025 with Mombasa County and hospital management.
The assessment identified inadequate storage capacity, deteriorating infrastructure and other deficiencies that limited safe management of medical commodities.
Renovation works included installing a ceiling, air‑conditioning, new flooring, additional windows with security grills, reinforced walls, a washroom, office spaces and perimeter paving to deter pests.
Further upgrades comprised repaired storage racks, rain‑water harvesting gutters, new doors for improved security and ventilation, and a washroom to support staff hygiene.
KEMSA chief executive officer Dr Waqo Ejersa said the improvements represent a direct investment in patient safety and comply with good storage and distribution practices set by the Pharmacy and Poisons Board and the World Health Organization.
Governor Nassir described the project as evidence of what targeted collaboration between national institutions and county governments can achieve.
The Port Reitz store is part of a series of KEMSA CSR interventions that have also upgraded medicine stores at Mtwapa Sub‑County Hospital in Kilifi and Msambweni County Referral Hospital in Kwale, as well as laboratory projects in Nakuru and Marsabit counties.
