Three rocket‑propelled grenades that landed in Moyale, Marsabit County, were safely detonated by security officers after being fired from neighbouring Ethiopia, officials said.

The incident, reported on Sunday night, forced KCSE candidates at Sessi Mixed Secondary School and St Mary’s Mixed Secondary School to move to safer locations.

Moyale Deputy County Commissioner Benedict Munywoki explained that stray bullets from Ethiopia had struck Sessi school, prompting the relocation to protect learners as cross‑border fighting continued.

Police reported that one RPG was found at Sessi Primary School while the other two landed near the Meteorological Department offices, prompting a bomb‑disposal response.

Officers from the Kenya Defence Forces, including bomb‑disposal experts based at Odha, identified the devices as RPGs and removed them for controlled detonation.

No injuries were reported during the operation, and police said the situation remained calm, though residents were urged to stay alert and report any suspicious objects.

UNHCR warned that more than 50,000 people have fled Ethiopia and crossed into Kenya through Moyale since late October, creating a growing humanitarian need.

Local authorities estimate up to 50,000 arrivals, with women and children comprising a large share, raising concerns over shelter, food, water and health services.

UNHCR has deployed an emergency team to Moyale and is coordinating with the Department of Refugee Services, county officials and partners such as IOM, UNICEF, WFP and the Kenya Red Cross.
