The Kanyonyoo weighbridge, situated in Yatta/Kwa Vonza Ward of Kitui Rural Constituency along the Garissa–Kitui–Nairobi Highway, was built by the Kenya National Highways Authority to monitor heavy‑vehicle weight and dimensions.

The facility became operational in February 2025 after construction and equipment installation were completed.

Station manager Faith Njani reports that roughly 1,500 vehicles are weighed each day, with only two to four trucks exceeding the legal axle‑load or dimensional limits and consequently facing enforcement action.

Digital weighing machines assess axle loads, weight distribution and overall dimensions, and are calibrated quarterly to maintain accuracy and transparency for drivers.

Vehicles that meet the prescribed limits are cleared to continue, while non‑compliant trucks are detained in a holding area pending legal enforcement.

Beyond road preservation, the weighbridge has enhanced cargo surveillance, contributing to local security and creating employment opportunities for residents.

Njani notes that some transporters deliberately avoid weighing their loads and, in rare cases, mobilise groups to intimidate staff, posing operational challenges.

The manager urges the public, fellow motorists and enforcement agencies to report intimidation and evasion attempts to sustain the bridge’s role in road safety and fair competition.
