On Thursday, Oct. 29, traders at the Kamukunji Business Centre staged a street protest in Nairobi, objecting to eviction orders issued after the recent Eastleigh building collapse.
Video footage captured by the outlet showed hundreds of traders marching through Kamukunji streets, carrying placards and twigs while chanting, with onlookers watching from nearby storey buildings.
The protest is linked to the 16‑storey building that collapsed in Eastleigh on Oct. 3, an incident that trapped many people and left dozens unaccounted for.
Authorities have ordered the closure of businesses on the road opposite the collapsed tower, citing concerns that the incident may have compromised the structural integrity of nearby structures, including the Kamukunji Business Centre.
Restrictions also remain around the collapse site on 9th Street, where multi‑agency teams continue search and recovery operations.
Traders warned that the forced evacuation threatens their livelihoods and urged the government to provide viable alternatives to sustain their families.
Kamukunji MP Yusuf Hassan appealed for a partial reopening of the market to mitigate the economic impact on traders who depend on the centre.
Nairobi North Regional Commissioner Simon Osumba reiterated that the area remains unsafe, maintaining the closure order despite the appeal.
