Former National Assembly speaker Justin Muturi posted a condolence message on Tuesday, November 3, acknowledging the death of Paul Kihara Kariuki, who served as Kenya’s Attorney General between 2018 and 2022.
Muturi noted that he succeeded Kariuki in the Attorney General’s office in 2022 and praised the institutional groundwork laid by his predecessor, describing the loss as profound for the legal profession.
He extended his condolences to Kariuki’s family, relatives, friends, former colleagues and the broader legal fraternity.
Chief Justice Martha Koome also issued a formal condolence on behalf of the Judiciary and the Republic of Kenya, providing a detailed account of Kariuki’s career.
Koome highlighted Kariuki’s appointment as a High Court judge in 2003 and his historic role as the first elected president of the Court of Appeal under the 2010 Constitution, a position he held from 2013 to 2018.
She also noted his contribution as a founding director of the Judiciary Training Institute, the predecessor to the Kenya Judiciary Academy, before his tenure as Attorney General.
Several senior figures from Kenya’s legal and public life joined Muturi and Koome in mourning Kariuki’s passing, underscoring his standing within the nation’s legal community.
