The State Department for Co‑operatives has issued Gazette Notices authorising probes into Kinatwa Sacco Society Limited (registration CS/10386) and Mathira North Farmers Co‑operative Society Limited (registration CS/10743) over concerns about their financial condition, management and operations.

Acting Commissioner for Co‑operative Development Symon Mburia signed the notices on 19 October and 23 October 2026, directing inquiries under Sections 58 and 73 of the Co‑operative Societies Act (Cap 490).

For Kinatwa Sacco, the inquiry will review its by‑laws, working and financial conditions, and the conduct of both current and former management committee members and officers, including an assessment of its indebtedness and asset‑liability balance.

Mburia appointed Assistant Commissioner Patrick Mutiiria and Senior Co‑operative Auditor John Kariuki Kinyanjui to lead the Kinatwa Sacco probe, giving them 21 days from 19 October to complete the work and to notify the society of the venue and timing.

The Mathira North Farmers investigation will focus on the society’s by‑laws, operational and financial status, especially its coffee production and marketing over the past five years, as well as the conduct of its management committee and staff and the governance of its assets.

For the Mathira North probe, Mburia named Principal Assistant Co‑operative Officer Eric O. Oketch and Principal Co‑operative Auditor Josephine M. Koronya, authorising them to finish the inquiry within 16 days of 23 October 2026 and to set an appropriate venue and time.

Mburia reminded both societies that the Co‑operative Societies Act provisions on inquiries—including Sections 60(1) and 60(2) on cost recovery, Section 94 on offences and Section 73 on surcharges—will apply to the investigations.
