The Kenyan government will spend an additional Ksh7.5 billion to construct 3,000 affordable housing units in Lamu County under the Affordable Housing Programme, President William Ruto said on Saturday.
The funding is intended to meet the expected surge in demand for homes as the Ksh2.2 trillion Dangote East Africa Refinery enters its construction phase, bringing workers and visitors to the coastal region.
Ruto noted that the new allocation adds to ongoing affordable‑housing projects in Lamu, which already include modern markets and student hostels costing a combined Ksh6 billion.
The president called on the private sector to invest in complementary facilities such as shops, hotels, transport services and other opportunities that will arise around the refinery and housing development.
A standing committee comprising national and Lamu County officials will be created to address resident concerns and safeguard community interests throughout the project.
During the same visit, Ruto handed title deeds to residents of several settlement schemes and warned people against paying fees to fraudsters claiming to process deeds.
He also pledged to return to the region before year‑end to issue another 200,000 title deeds, expanding land‑ownership documentation for Lamu’s communities.
