Governor Johnson Sakaja updated Nairobi residents that the first phase of the Gikomba Market redevelopment is 98 per cent complete and that final touches are being applied ahead of an expected opening in the next few weeks.
The initial phase consists of three new blocks, each with a ground floor and two upper levels, designed to house roughly 2,000 traders per block, bringing total capacity to about 6,000 traders.
Each block incorporates modern amenities such as ablution facilities, enhanced security measures and a dedicated fire station, aiming to improve safety and hygiene for traders and shoppers.
Delivery pathways link the three blocks, allowing goods to move between them without requiring traders to descend to ground level, which is intended to streamline operations and reduce congestion.
Sakaja highlighted that the project faced political resistance, with some politicians reportedly camping at the site to discourage support, but the county government persisted to protect traders’ interests.
He expressed confidence that the completed facilities will provide a safer, more organised and modern trading environment, enhancing the overall business climate at one of Nairobi’s busiest commercial hubs.
