Piles of garbage have been building up along Digo Road in Gikomba for weeks, narrowing the road and making vehicle movement difficult for drivers, taxi operators and other road users.

The waste has spread onto the carriageway, leaving only a narrow strip for vehicles and forcing drivers to squeeze to one side, which has created frequent traffic jams, especially on busy days.

Taxi drivers say the blockage forces them to let one vehicle pass before another, creating additional delays on busy days.

Motorists also warn of broken glass and other debris mixed with the waste, compelling them to drive on the opposite side of the road to avoid tyre damage.

Effect on local businesses and traders

Vendors along Digo Road report that the foul smell and reduced accessibility are driving customers away, with some considering relocation to maintain sales.

Stalls selling caps, clothing, foodstuffs and other goods say the garbage blocks entry to their premises, limiting the space customers can use to reach them.

Calls for clean‑up and enforcement

Local traders and road users are urging municipal authorities to remove the accumulated waste and enforce waste‑management regulations to prevent further dumping.
