At least four people have died and one person was injured after heavy rain from Storm Adam caused widespread flooding across southern France on Tuesday.

Two of the fatalities were women, aged 86 and 26, who were found drowned in a cellar in the Bouches-du-Rhône region.

A 4x4 vehicle was swept away by floodwaters; one occupant escaped through a window while another man was later found dead.

Authorities have not released further details about the fourth death.

Dozens of residents in the towns of Mouriès and Saint‑Martin‑de‑Crau, located between Montpellier and Marseille, were placed in emergency shelters after the floods.

Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot reported that roads and train lines in the affected area were disrupted, confirming the scale of the impact on transport.

Jacques Witkowski, prefect of the Bouches‑du‑Rhône department, said water levels had risen to unprecedented heights and that emergency services were mobilised at an exceptional level.

Météo‑France issued an orange‑level wind warning for five western departments as Storm Austen, a new system, is expected to affect north‑west France later in the week.
