Bernard Kariuki Ngugi, a former credit control officer at an unnamed insurance company, was arrested and arraigned at Milimani Law Courts on Friday, 23 October 2026.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) alleges Ngugi used his privileged access to the insurer’s financial systems to divert funds to three companies that had no legitimate business relationship with the insurer.

The alleged scheme ran from 2018 until November 2025 and involved Auris General Merchants Ltd, Donbitz Global Limited and Pedram Global Limited, which were irregularly entered into the insurer’s payment system to receive the diverted money.

Investigators say Sh35.27 million was routed through Auris General Merchants Ltd, Sh32.68 million through Donbitz Global Limited, and a further Sh21.63 million through Pedram Global Limited.

The case file was sent to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, which recommended charging Ngugi with theft by servant, money laundering and related offences.

Ngugi entered a not‑guilty plea, was released on a Sh2 million bond or an alternative cash bail of Sh800,000, and the matter is scheduled for pre‑trial directions on 10 November 2026.

The DCI reiterated its commitment to tackling complex financial crimes and noted that the allegations remain unproven, with Ngugi presumed innocent until convicted.
