Fit Energy said it will redevelop former mining and aggregate land in Newport Township, Luzerne County, into a technology and data‑center complex that will include on‑site natural‑gas fuel‑cell power generation.
The company announced on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, that engineering work and the remaining permitting steps are now under way, ahead of any construction activity.
Newport Township approved zoning for the combined power‑generation and data‑center uses in August 2026, clearing a key regulatory hurdle for the development.
Fit Energy’s strategic agreement with FuelCell Energy will supply the fuel‑cell technology that converts natural gas into electricity through an electrochemical process, rather than conventional combustion.
The plan calls for new investments in electricity, natural‑gas, water and sewer infrastructure to support both the data‑center and the on‑site power facility.
Fit Energy expects the construction phase to create work for contractors, skilled‑trade workers and suppliers over several years, followed by permanent jobs in operations, maintenance, security and facility management once the site is operational.
The developer also indicated that the project could generate tax revenue for Newport Township, the local school district and Luzerne County.
A Community Benefits Agreement is being negotiated with the township, and a public information session will be scheduled to allow residents to review the proposal and raise questions, though details of the meeting have not yet been set.
Fit Energy has not disclosed the total investment amount, data‑center capacity, electricity‑generation capacity, number of buildings, construction start date or completion schedule, and it has not identified a data‑center tenant or projected natural‑gas consumption.
The project remains in the engineering and permitting phase; its progress will depend on completing remaining regulatory approvals and finalising site‑design, energy system details and the community agreement.
