Eric Muriuki has departed NCBA Group, where he ran the LOOP digital banking business, to assume a Managing Executive role at Absa Group that covers pan‑African growth strategy, platforms and digital ventures.
His LinkedIn profile indicates that he will start the new position this month and will be based in the Johannesburg area.
Muriuki’s tenure at NCBA lasted 19 years and four months, during which he held three senior posts: Programme Director, Enterprise Transformation (July 2007 – August 2012), General Manager, New Business Ventures (August 2012 – September 2019) and Group Director, Digital Business and CEO of the LOOP neobank (from October 2019 until his departure).
Earlier in his career he worked at Citi Kenya as a Business Systems Manager from 1999 to 2004 and then at Co‑operative Bank of Kenya as Business Change Manager until mid‑2007.
At NCBA he helped design the trust‑account structure that enabled Safaricom’s M‑PESA to issue electronic money with regulatory approval, a cornerstone of Kenya’s mobile‑money ecosystem.
His work also contributed to the launch of M‑Shwari, a mobile savings and micro‑loan product, and the Fuliza overdraft service, both of which have become widely used credit solutions in Kenya.
As CEO of LOOP, Muriuki expanded the neobank into other East African markets, experience that aligns with Absa’s ambition to scale digital ventures across the continent.
