Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi appointed Engineer Edward Mwirigi Kinyua as the Director General of the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).

Kinyua assumes the role following the resignation of former EPRA boss Daniel Kiptoo and the interim tenure of Dr Eng. Joseph Oketch, who had been acting Director General.

The appointment is part of a broader reshuffle of senior officials at key energy agencies, including the naming of Tom Odhiambo Imbo as KETRACO Managing Director and CEO, and Stephen Kipsang Busieney as Managing Director and CEO of the Geothermal Development Company.

The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum confirmed that the three appointments take effect immediately and were made following recruitment processes conducted by the respective boards in line with legal and human‑resource guidelines.

Kinyua previously headed EPRA’s Petroleum and Gas Directorate, overseeing regulatory matters in Kenya’s oil and gas sector before moving to the top post.

His appointment comes months after Daniel Kiptoo was arrested by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in a probe into alleged importation of substandard fuel, a case that has heightened scrutiny of the regulator’s oversight of petroleum quality and pricing.

The ministry’s statement congratulated the new appointees and expressed confidence that they will support the President’s ambitious plans for the energy and petroleum sector.
