Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said the government will replace the traditional paper birth notification with an electronic version, called e‑notification, to simplify obtaining birth certificates.

The pilot will launch in Nandi, Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet counties, with the first implementation timed to coincide with the Mashujaa Day celebrations.

Murkomen explained that the e‑notification will be issued online immediately after birth, removing the need for parents to travel to hospitals for paper notifications and later to Huduma Centres for certificates.

Parents have previously reported losing physical notifications and facing difficulties obtaining certificates without them, prompting the shift to a digital system.

Immigration Principal Secretary Belio Kipsang said the digital system will be extended to hospitals contracted by the Social Health Authority within three months, after finalising integration with the Ministry of Health’s hospital management platforms.

Kipsang added that once integration is complete, all SHA‑benefiting hospitals will issue e‑notifications, ensuring nationwide coverage after the pilot phase.

The announcement follows a recent government move allowing Kenyans to apply for and download birth certificates online, further digitising civil registration services.
