Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi said he has no connection to a reported artificial‑intelligence driven social media push that praised the government’s decision to halt a planned Kenya Power electricity tariff increase.

In a social‑media statement he noted that the Anthropic report did not identify the actors behind the activity and offered no proof that the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum was involved.

He added that coordinated accounts are common on social platforms and that their existence does not demonstrate Ministry participation.

Wandayi affirmed the ministry will keep communicating its work through official channels and will not allow the unverified allegations to distract its agenda.

Anthropic’s findings on the AI‑generated posts

US‑based AI firm Anthropic reported that it detected and disrupted a coordinated campaign that used its Claude model to generate political posts presented as organic Kenyan user content.

The posts were produced in exact batches of 50 and were instructed to mimic grassroots support, featuring hashtags such as #PowerReliefKE and #PoweringTheNewKenya that praised the halted tariff increase.

Beyond the electricity issue, the network also circulated messages suggesting the United Opposition was fragmenting ahead of the 2027 General Election and targeted former leaders Rigathi Gachagua and Uhuru Kenyatta.

Anthropic said it found no direct evidence of Kenyan government participation, although the campaign’s pro‑government tone and hashtag usage implied alignment with the ruling coalition.
