The 27‑kilometre Kivwe‑Karingari‑Kevote‑Nduuri‑Kanja‑Munyutu‑Gorofa road has received a fresh layer of bitumen, marking the first major upgrade of a project budgeted at KSh1.5 billion.
The Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) is supervising the works, which are split into two 13.5‑kilometre links; the first link runs from Kivwe through Karingari, Kevote and Nduuri, serving communities in Runyenjes and Manyatta constituencies.
Long‑time residents such as mechanic Samuel Mugo recalled that the road had been discussed since 1987 but never upgraded until now.
Community member Gladys Njagi said the tarmacking fulfills a promise she heard as a child, turning a once‑muddy corridor into a usable surface.
Eliud Nyagah Njue urged authorities to maintain momentum and complete the remaining sections, noting that similar assurances have been made by successive governments.
Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki, on a development tour of the Mount Kenya region, said the government wants to be judged on completed works rather than campaign promises ahead of upcoming elections.
While the newly laid tarmac has lifted spirits, Kennedy Munene of Makengi noted that construction continues on certain sections, indicating the project is not yet fully finished.
