Eldoret will host Kenya’s UN Tourism Week from September 21 to 27 at the University of Eldoret, under the theme “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism.”

Tourism Principal Secretary Julius Bitok said the week offers visitors and industry players a chance to experience the tourism potential of Eldoret and the wider North Rift region.

The programme will bring together national and county governments, investors, technology firms, innovators, scholars, conservationists and the public, with capacity‑building sessions targeting micro, small and medium enterprises, tour operators, hoteliers, guides, youth and community‑based tourism enterprises.

Focus on AI and digital tools

The celebrations will showcase AI and digital technologies as emerging tools for enhancing Kenya’s tourism, featuring innovations, start‑ups, digital solutions and best practices in travel technology and smart tourism.

Training and exhibitions will cover destination marketing, content creation, customer engagement, business development and market intelligence, aiming to improve entrepreneurs’ visibility and competitiveness.

Participants will also explore how AI can transform tourism businesses and create new opportunities for destinations and local communities.

Promoting the North Rift as a tourism hub

Organisers aim to attract more international tourists by promoting experiences beyond Kenya’s traditional safari and beach offerings, including immersive cultural and sporting activities in the North Rift.

Road trips, destination caravans and exhibitions will showcase local people, places and lived experiences, while activities such as hot‑air balloon rides, cultural events and sports will highlight the region’s diversity.

Environmental conservation will be integrated through tree‑planting and clean‑up activities, reinforcing sustainable tourism goals.

Looking ahead for tourism diversification

The Eldoret event is part of Kenya’s broader strategy to position the North Rift as a key tourism destination while leveraging technology to broaden market reach and create new revenue streams for local businesses.
