Abigail Chepkemboi, a 21‑year‑old electrical engineering student at Eldoret National Polytechnic, obtained a bedsitter unit in the Pioneer Affordable Housing Project through the Boma Yangu initiative.

She paid a KSh 32,000 deposit for a unit on the 12th floor and will pay KSh 3,800 in monthly rent, making her one of the youngest beneficiaries of the scheme.

Chepkemboi earned the deposit by working construction jobs, including scaffolding, sand‑paper work and electrical installations, while attending classes and weekends.

She first joined the Boma Yangu site as an attachment student, later staying on to earn income after lectures, carrying heavy loads up nine flights of stairs during early phases.

When she learned a few bedsitter units remained available, she visited the housing office, paid the deposit within three days and secured Room 10 on the 12th floor, registered in her name.

At the commissioning ceremony attended by President William Ruto, Chepkemboi received her keys alongside 2,157 other beneficiaries, while the project’s amenities include a pool, clubhouse, kindergarten and 104 shops.

She confirmed she will continue her studies, having arranged a hostel for the upcoming term while keeping the newly acquired home.

The Pioneer development is part of Kenya’s broader Boma Yangu rollout, targeting over 300,000 affordable units nationwide, with additional sites in Washingtoni County, Kidiwa and Lumumba.

President Ruto also announced KSh 264 million allocated to 84 Jua Kali associations in Eldoret through job opportunities linked to the housing project.
