The Ethics and Anti‑Corruption Commission (EACC) confirmed on 16 October that two traffic police officers were arrested on allegations of extorting motorists along the Maua‑Makutano Road near Kemu in Meru County.
During a targeted surveillance operation, EACC officers recovered Ksh23,000 in various denominations from the two officers.
A Toyota Fielder parked beside the road was impounded, suspected to belong to one of the detained officers.
Both officers were escorted to the commission’s Upper Eastern Regional Office in Isiolo for processing and statement recording as investigations continue.
The arrests are part of a broader EACC crackdown on suspected bribery by traffic enforcement officers, who frequently stop motorists on major highways and local roads.
Earlier the same day, the commission also arrested an NTSA clerk accused of demanding a Ksh18,000 bribe for a driving‑licence application; the clerk received Ksh8,000 and was later released on Ksh50,000 bail.
In July, EACC similarly detained three traffic officers after complaints of routine bribe demands at a Webuye‑Kitale roadblock, prompting a surveillance operation.
The commission said the July arrests followed motorist complaints, including from public service vehicle operators and heavy‑truck drivers, that officers regularly demanded money at the checkpoint.
