Deputy President Kithure Kindiki announced that the Mau Mau road projects linking several Mount Kenya counties remain a top government priority and that funds have been allocated to finish the work within a year.
He noted that about 65 percent of the roads are already completed and the remaining sections will be wrapped up over the next twelve months under the current administration.
During a Thursday inspection in Nyeri County, Kindiki visited the Ihururu Junction‑Kanjora‑Dedan Kimathi University‑Maigayuini and Ihururu Junction‑Njoguini‑Kahigaini routes in Tetu Constituency, among other sites.
He highlighted that the government is accelerating the completion of 133 km of Mau Mau roads in Tetu, the longest stretch among the projects, in honour of freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi.
Overall, Nyeri County is slated to receive 775 km of new or upgraded roads at a cost of Sh45 billion as part of a nationwide programme to boost economic transformation.
Kindiki warned contractors to adhere to the schedule and avoid sub‑standard work, urging a rapid build‑out to modernise Kenya’s infrastructure.
He added that the completed roads will improve market access for cash‑crop farmers – especially tea, coffee and milk – helping them transport produce more efficiently.
Other projects inspected included the Ruring’u Stadium, Nyeri Modern Market, the Sagana‑Karatina‑Marua highway extension, and the Kwa Power‑Muruguru Girls‑Kengen road, which has received Sh163 million.
