Detectives recovered a grey Land Rover Discovery, registration KCY 001J, that had been reported stolen in the United Kingdom.
The vehicle was located on Nairobi’s Northern Bypass during Operation Carback II, a week‑long, multi‑agency effort to dismantle organised motor‑vehicle crime networks.
The DCI traced the Land Rover through the INTERPOL database, which confirmed its theft report from the UK, and subsequently impounded the car for processing at DCI headquarters.
Operation Carback II was coordinated by the DCI’s INTERPOL National Central Bureau in Nairobi and the Operations Directorate, working with the National Transport and Safety Authority, Kenya Revenue Authority, ODPP, KEBS, Kenya Police and Administration Police.
The crackdown formed part of INTERPOL’s Project Drive Out, in partnership with Europol, aimed at disrupting cross‑border vehicle theft, recovering stolen cars and parts, and strengthening international law‑enforcement cooperation.
Across Kenya, detectives inspected more than 1,800 vehicles and cross‑checked over 260,000 registrations against INTERPOL records, targeting yards, showrooms, spare‑parts dealers, garages, bazaars and highway checkpoints.
Other recoveries during the operation included a white Mercedes‑Benz Kompressor with mismatched registration in Thika West and a forklift with an obliterated chassis number in Embakasi, both referred for further investigation.
The DCI reiterated its commitment to continue collaborating with national, regional and international partners to combat vehicle theft, recover stolen assets and prosecute those involved in the criminal networks.
