The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) announced the arrest of Muia Mutune, also known as Fredrick Mbuta, after detectives linked him to a series of robberies targeting bank customers who had just withdrawn cash.

Detectives from the Operation Action Team (OAT) and the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) carried out the operation in Embakasi Village, following intelligence that identified Mutune as a key suspect.

Mutune, who had previously been arrested in April on similar charges and released on bond in July, remains in custody pending arraignment.

The DCI confirmed that other members of the gang are still at large and that investigations continue to locate the remaining suspects.

The criminal ring allegedly used traffic police uniforms, reflector jackets and a military‑style jungle hat to stop victims after they withdrew cash from banks, exploiting the perceived authority of law enforcement.

Three separate incidents were highlighted: a Chinese national robbed of KSh2.14 million on Jan 23, a man robbed of KSh4.2 million near Gateway Mall on Mar 17, and a woman and rider robbed of KSh1.4 million at Cabanas Interchange.

In each case, suspects claimed to be police officers, handcuffed or blindfolded victims, and stole cash along with mobile phones before abandoning them at various locations.

Investigators recovered a suspected getaway vehicle—a Mazda CX‑5—along with reflector jackets and the jungle hat believed to have been used in the robberies.
