Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), working with Interpol, identified and recovered a grey Land Rover Discovery bearing registration KCY 001J that had been reported stolen in the United Kingdom.

The vehicle was found at a motor‑vehicle yard along Nairobi County’s Northern Bypass during the multi‑agency enforcement drive known as Operation Carback II.

A check against the INTERPOL database confirmed the theft report from the UK, prompting the seizure and subsequent impoundment of the Land Rover, which was escorted to DCI headquarters for further processing.

DCI officials said the operation inspected more than 1,800 vehicles and cross‑checked over 260,000 entries in the INTERPOL database, targeting yards, showrooms, spare‑parts shops, garages, bazaars and highway checkpoints.

Operation Carback II builds on a similar 2024 crackdown and is part of a broader INTERPOL‑coordinated initiative, Project Drive Out, in partnership with Europol, aimed at dismantling trans‑national motor‑vehicle theft networks.

Investigations into the recovered Land Rover and other vehicles with irregular registrations uncovered a white Mercedes‑Benz Kompressor in Thika West and a forklift with an altered chassis number in Embakasi; both matters have been referred to the relevant sub‑county criminal investigations officers for further action.

The DCI indicated that inquiries into the Land Rover’s ownership and the broader registration anomalies remain ongoing.
