During the High Court trial in Kibera, a pastor who also serves as an administrator at Jesus Is Alive Ministries told the court that staff found an Oppo mobile phone belonging to the slain Multimedia University student Sylvia Kemunto Ayaye among the church offerings.
The phone was discovered on April 2, 2025, while church volunteers were counting the collection, three days after Ayaye’s alleged killing on March 30, 2025.
According to the witness, the phone was kept in safe custody until police arrived, who were then informed that call‑data logs indicated the device had been within the church compound.
Church staff subsequently handed the phone to the investigating officers, who took it as part of the evidence chain.
The testimony formed part of the murder trial of Erick Mutinda Philip, whom prosecutors accuse of killing Kemunto at the university campus on Magadi Road, Lang’ata, Nairobi County.
University security head Silas Ochieng Elphine Otieno also testified, confirming that the university received a missing‑person report for Kemunto and coordinated with investigators.
Otieno said a search team later discovered a decomposing body in a rooftop water‑reservoir tank at a university hostel on April 2, 2025, which police identified as Kemunto’s.
Additional witnesses, including fellow student Neununa Mounira Namatsi, described Kemunto’s relationship with Mutinda as toxic and noted her consideration of moving out of the university hostel for safety.
Mutinda faces a single charge of murder for the March 30, 2025 killing of Kemunto at Multimedia University in Lang’ata Sub‑County, Nairobi County.
