Julian “JuJu” Lewis, the University of Colorado’s backup quarterback, experienced a medical emergency at the school’s athletic facility on Wednesday and was subsequently taken to a hospital, his father reported on the social media platform X.
His father, Carlton Lewis, posted on Thursday morning that his son is “recovering” and thanked the medical team, teammates and Colorado fans for their prayers and support.
Carlton Lewis also asked the public to respect Julian and his family’s privacy during the recovery period.
The University of Colorado issued a statement saying it extends full support to JuJu and his family, emphasizing that his health and well‑being remain the top priority.
Teammate wide receiver Joseph Williams shared messages of prayer and support on social media, also highlighting the broader issue of athlete mental health.
Lewis, a highly recruited quarterback now in his second year, opened the season as the starter before coach Deion Sanders shifted the offense to Isaac Wilson.
Before the incident, he had logged 733 passing yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions this season, and earlier delivered a record‑setting performance against Weber State with four passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown in a single half.
Colorado’s schedule lists a game against Kansas State on Saturday.
