Nairobi‑based fintech ChamaBox, founded by David Esabwa Makotsi, is rolling out a mobile‑first platform that lets savings groups, investment clubs and table‑banking associations manage contributions, loans and governance without paper records.

The system integrates M‑Pay STK Push and Paybill payments, automatically posting each transaction to a digital ledger and eliminating the need for manual cash‑matching.

Loan administration features include configurable interest calculations, repayment schedules, penalty settings and automated SMS reminders, giving groups a structured way to track borrowing and repayments.

Each member receives a personal portal showing their equity, loan balance and contribution history, allowing real‑time inspection of group finances and reducing disputes over payouts or dividends.

Governance tools such as multi‑signatory withdrawal approvals, dividend calculations and archived meeting minutes extend the platform beyond bookkeeping to support group decision‑making.

ChamaBox is entering a market already served by several rivals, including Chamasoft, ChamaPay, Chama, ChamaGRID and eChama, all of which offer similar contribution tracking and M‑Pay integration.

The startup, which describes itself as bootstrapped with under US$2 million raised, says its live platform is already used by groups in Nairobi, the western region and the Coast, focusing on active revolving funds rather than simple membership registers.

Makotsi notes that scaling adoption will require addressing varied group structures, contribution models and digital‑literacy levels while maintaining transaction accuracy as volumes grow.

If successful, ChamaBox aims to become an essential operating layer for community savings organisations across East Africa, linking Kenya’s dominant mobile‑money ecosystem with informal finance practices.
