On Monday, Oct 12, ICT Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo hosted a delegation from Microsoft led by Jeff Bullwinkel, the company’s Vice President and Deputy General Counsel for Corporate, External and Legal Affairs in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
The three participants, joined by Microsoft East Africa’s Angela Ng'ang'a, discussed a range of topics including the adoption of artificial intelligence in government, cybersecurity, digital infrastructure and university‑based digital‑skills programmes.
During the session Microsoft briefed Kabogo on its ongoing global restructuring, prompting the minister to negotiate the retention of Kenyan talent at the firm’s Nairobi engineering centre.
Kabogo wrote that he stressed the importance of keeping local staff, protecting jobs at the Nairobi centre and maintaining investor confidence in Kenya’s technology sector.
The minister also reassured Microsoft of the government’s commitment to a competitive, transparent investment environment, while Microsoft reiterated its long‑term commitment to Kenya.
Both parties agreed to develop a joint action plan to advance the discussions on talent retention, AI policy support and broader ecosystem development.
Later that day Kabogo, accompanied by Communications Authority Director General David Mugonyi, met the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) delegation at Telposta Towers, extending the dialogue on Kenya’s digital transformation.
He indicated that Kenya and the GSMA would collaborate on a coordinated roadmap to showcase the country’s digital achievements, innovations and investment opportunities.
Kabogo added that the two entities would also work together to promote regional connectivity and digital inclusion across Africa.
The minister described both meetings as resourceful steps toward realising a digital Kenya.
