Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir told members of the National Assembly Transport Committee that the 60‑kilometre Rironi‑Naivasha section of the Ksh200 billion highway will now be opened in early December 2026, after the project missed the October 30 deadline.

During the committee’s inspection on October 30, Chirchir said the contractor is working within the revised timetable and that about four kilometres of road are being completed each week.

He noted that more than 90 work teams have been deployed along the stretch to accelerate construction and that the government has secured sufficient bitumen supplies to avoid material shortages.

While the main dualling works are slated for completion by early December, some design elements at Naivasha Junction – an interchange with an overpass and underpass – will remain unfinished at the time of opening.

The first phase of the project, covering Rironi‑Naivasha, is being executed by China Road and Bridge Corporation under a public‑private partnership, with later phases to be handled by Shandong Hi‑Speed Road and Bridge International Engineering.

When completed, the expanded highway will feature four lanes between Rironi and Naivasha, six lanes beyond, grade‑separated interchanges, modern tolling facilities and an Intelligent Traffic Management System, with tolls set at Ksh8 per kilometre for the Rironi‑Naivasha segment.
