A passenger bus operated by Power of the Word Church International collided with a commercial truck at Kanga in Mtito Andei at about 7.45 am on Sunday, killing 24 people.

Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir expressed condolences to the victims’ families and described the frequency of such accidents as “unacceptable”.

In a statement, Chirchir warned that road crashes undermine health services and economic productivity and called for an end to treating road safety as “business as usual”.

The ministry will expand the black‑spot management programme, targeting engineering fixes on identified dangerous sections of the Nairobi‑Mombasa corridor.

Authorities plan to coordinate with other government agencies to crack down on reckless overtaking, speeding and other violations, while promoting responsible road‑user behaviour.

Chirchir also announced structured driver‑training and compliance measures to raise competence and discipline among professional drivers.

The ministry intends to work with the Judiciary and Parliament to address implementation gaps in the Commercial Vehicle Regulations 2026, Vehicle Inspection Regulations 2026 and School Transport Regulations 2026.

President William Ruto has ordered a comprehensive inspection of all public service vehicles to ensure compliance with safety standards and urged mass‑transport operators to exercise caution.
