Bungoma Children’s Hospital announced condolences to the family of three‑year‑old Leila Mutenyo, who died during an adenotonsillectomy performed at the facility, and said it will cooperate with all investigations.

Director Dr. Dickens Lubanga said the hospital deeply regrets the loss and is committed to supporting the bereaved family while seeking answers about the child’s death.

A post‑mortem examination, overseen by a pathologist appointed by the family, identified sudden cardiac arrest during the operation as the primary cause of death.

The autopsy findings, together with the hospital’s medical and procedural records, will form the basis of a comprehensive internal review aimed at establishing the circumstances of the incident.

Dr. Lubanga affirmed that established clinical protocols were followed before and during the surgery, which was carried out by a senior ENT surgeon with more than 20 years of experience and an equally experienced anaesthesiologist from a national referral hospital.

The hospital said it will continue to work with relevant regulatory authorities and investigative agencies to ensure transparency and help the family understand what happened.

Leila’s father, Johnson Wafula, alleged that his daughter had been taken to the facility for a routine medical check‑up before the procedure and that the family seeks clarification on how she died during surgery.
