Ruth Rowe, 34, and her husband Steven, 35, disposed of their car, furniture and other items via online marketplaces before purchasing a one‑way ticket to Sri Lanka in 2023.

The couple left their barn conversion in Herefordshire to spend more time with their children, Aurora, four, and Atlas, three, before they enter formal schooling.

They travel on a budget of around £30 (approximately KSh 5,000) per day, which translates to about £280 (KSh 46,000) a month, compared with £420 (KSh 69,000) monthly expenses they incurred in the UK.

The cost differential enables the family to save roughly KSh 23,000 each month, amounting to an estimated KSh 276,000 in annual savings.

To date they have visited 17 countries, including Costa Rica, Guatemala, Ecuador and Indonesia, typically staying in Airbnb rentals for four weeks at a time.

Steven supports the travel financially through a remote online coaching business that allows him to work while the family moves between destinations.

The family practices ‘world‑schooling’, using everyday experiences, local currencies and cultural immersion to educate Aurora and Atlas without screen time.
