Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino alleges that President William Ruto personally offered him the Cabinet Secretary for Education position during the height of the Gen Z protests in 2024.

Owino said the offer came as the President faced mounting pressure from anti‑government demonstrations that later led to the dissolution of the cabinet on 11 July 2024.

In an interview on the Thee Alfa House YouTube channel, Owino reiterated that he turned down the role because it conflicted with his political principles and opposition to a broad‑based government.

He added that even former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s support for the appointment did not sway his decision, emphasizing his adherence to personal ideology.

Owino linked his refusal to a broader stance against the broad‑based government model, noting he was the only ODM MP who did not join such a coalition when it was formed.

The claim emerges amid scrutiny of leaders linked to the Linda Mwananchi movement, with observers noting potential pressure on politicians ahead of the 2027 general election.

Owino defended his decision to establish the Mwananchi Party, arguing that independent party structures enable youth participation and protect politicians from undue influence.
