Embakasi East MP Babu Owino met University of Nairobi Vice‑Chancellor Professor Ayub Gitau, deans and student leaders on Friday to discuss the institution’s growth and financial recovery.
Owino posted on Facebook that he returned to his former university to explore ways of supporting its development.
The meeting followed an Auditor‑General report that classified UoN as technically insolvent and a parliamentary hearing the day before.
The audit for the 2021/2022 financial year recorded a deficit of KSh2.2 billion, raising the accumulated deficit to roughly KSh8.8 billion.
UoN reported current assets of KSh5.17 billion but negative working capital of about KSh8.62 billion, alongside statutory arrears estimated at KSh10.6 billion.
Vice‑Chancellor Gitau told lawmakers that the university’s asset base exceeds KSh220 billion and outlined four revenue‑generating measures: leasing properties, expanding enrolment, securing research funding and reviving commercial enterprises.
Parliamentarians asked for clear implementation timelines, verifiable financial projections and measurable targets to assess whether the proposals can address the liabilities.
Owino expressed enthusiasm about reconnecting with former lecturers and noted that the meeting brought together management, faculty heads and student leaders to consider strengthening the university.
