Louisa, an Australian expatriate raising two children in South Africa, posted a Facebook video on 13 October 2026 describing how South African schools differ from those in Australia.
She said Australian schools usually run from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm, while many South African schools start around 7:30 am and have timetables that vary by grade.
Louisa noted that some South African pupils remove their shoes on arrival and attend classes barefoot, a practice that contrasts with the expectation in Australia for children to keep footwear on throughout the day.
She added that the barefoot policy is not universal and varies between schools across South Africa.
Another striking difference, according to Louisa, is the prominence of school sports; inter‑school competitions attract strong participation from pupils, parents and communities, creating an energetic atmosphere.
In Australia, competitive sports are typically organised through private clubs or outside school hours, often on weekends, rather than being a central part of the school day.
Louisa also praised South African schools for placing a strong emphasis on manners, respect and personal presentation, which she says shape children’s daily routines and behaviour.
The video sparked a lively discussion on social media, with South African users sharing their own experiences of school discipline, barefoot policies and the role of sports in education.
